ROUGHAGE N’ READY, WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Roughage N’ Ready describes bulls that are developed using specific guidelines to promote muscle growth and athleticism. 99% of the ration by body weight is roughage. This very high roughage low starch diet consists mainly of WDG, straw or corn stalks and hay with a little silage for moisture. The bulls are targeted to gain 3 pounds per day from weaning to yearling, about 160 days. This rate helps them grow and develop sexually, express their genetic differences and stay athletic.

Bulls fed to gain 4 to 5 pounds on a shortened test are developed for marketing purposes not breeding purposes. With EPD’s and Roughage N’ Ready, we don’t need a corn bucket to “find” the good ones.

Roughage N’ Ready mimics a grass based diet with plenty of exercise to grow and condition bulls for the big game—breeding season. This system identifies bulls that convert roughage effectively, and those that can’t, so we can eliminate the losers before they get to your pasture.

FLYING H GENETICS MARCH 7 ROUGHAGE N’ READY BULL SALE

Cattlemen from 11 states appraised the high quality, roughage developed bulls offered by Flying H Genetics.  This family ranch has serviced the cattle industry with high quality seed stock for 60 years.  Top selling sire group were FLYING H DIRECTOR 33S sons.

Both his Black Balancers and Purebred Gelbvieh had tremendous mass and muscle in very usable condition and frame. Top selling DIRECTOR son was Lot 3, selected by  Matson Gelbvieh, NE as a new herdbull for $5750.

Top selling Gelbvieh, Lot 85, was sired by Black Impact 3940 and is the new herd sire for Diamond V Gelbvieh of Stockton, KS. The Impact sons demonstrated balanced genetics and great phenotype with several going to be used on Angus cows to produce Smartcross calves.

A new offering this year were the SimAngus and Simmental and they were well received traveling as far as Arkansas and Texas.

There were no extreme tops with the top selling bull going to long time customer, Richard Taylor, NE for $6,000.  He was a tremendously thick and massive frame six Carolina Master son that had several top cattlemen wanting to take him home.

Four buyers bought 5 or more bulls with a lot of interest generated this year in the ROUGHAGE N’ READY Bull Development Program.  Cattlemen are getting tired of buying fat bulls and like the muscular, athletic, sound footed bulls that are grown and developed to breed cows instead of fat, lazy bulls that look pretty but melt when put to work.

130 Bulls averaged $2646
Gelbvieh averaged $2778
Balancers averaged $2698
SimAngus averaged $2500
Purebred Angus averaged $2429

RE:  IMPORTANT SALE INFORMATION

Have you had time to check out the bulls in the Flying H Genetics catalog yet?  If so, you probably noticed that the DNA data was missing.  Due to workload at the DNA lab, we did not receive the DNA results in time to get them included in the sale catalog.

Knowing this information is important, we decided it was necessary to send it to you before sale day so I have included the DNA results for color and indexes of the other traits to help you evaluate the bulls.

The Homozygous Black bulls are noted ED/ED and the black bulls that are red carriers are noted as ED/e.

The three indexes of the DNA traits sampled are classified as:

Carcass Quality Index—is a weighted average of %Choice, Marbling and Tenderness Scores.

Muscle and Growth Index—is a weighted average of Ribeye Area, Yield Grade, Fat Thickness and Average Daily Gain Scores.

Maternal Index—is a weighted average of Stayability, Maternal Calving Ease, Heifer Pregnancy Rate and Docility.

The page listing all of the DNA traits tested for is on page 19 of the sale book.

If you have any questions on this information, please call me at 308.493.5411 or 308.962.6500.

Thank you for your interest in Flying H Genetics.  We are looking forward to visiting with you on March 7th.

Until then, take care.
