A group comprised of beef industry stakeholders have formed a new group called the US Roundtable for Sustainable Beef, otherwise known as the USRSB. The group has members from several notable companies in the industry including Tyson Foods and Cargill. But just what is the aim of the USRSB? While the name obviously indicates they are seeking ways to make beef more sustainable, there are a few ways they hope to accomplish that goal.
According to the USRSB, the main goal of the organization is to identify and test different sustainability concepts that could be used in the beef industry. In order to accomplish this, the group will be relying on everyone from retailers to packers, and both government organizations and private companies. The beef industry is large and expansive, and the USRSB wants to take advantage of the wide range of skillsets and resources that are available to them.
One of the reasons behind the formation of this group may be an increased interest in products that are environmentally and economically stable. Market data suggests that these factors do indeed play a role in the types of food people buy, and stakeholders are eager to see how this translates to the beef industry.
Currently, the USRSB is made up of 43 members, but more founding members will be considered until June 1. It will be interesting to see what this group ends up accomplishing, and how sustainability will impact the future of the industry.
